Man United's current situation under Jose Mourinho is dire but not irreparable

Raphel Honigstein tells the FC panel why he thinks Manchester City's scintillating domestic form hasn't transferred over to Europe. Nobody at Manchester United wants the club to be like it is now. Not Ed Woodward, busy with agents who represent some very fine footballers. Not the staff, many of whom are United fans from Manchester and just want their club to start punching its weight again. Not Jose Mourinho, who defends himself and his excellent historical record against his many detractors -- or "lovers" as he calls them. Cesc Fabregas 9/10, Callum Hudson-Odoi 8/10 as Chelsea make easy work of 10-man PAOK

Chelsea's Maurizio Sarri is demanding a reaction from his side in the Europa League and against Fulham following their loss to Tottenham where he said they lacked determination. LONDON -- Chelsea secured their place in the Europa League round of 32 with a comprehensive 4-0 win over 10-man PAOK at Stamford Bridge, with Olivier Giroud netting twice, Alvaro Morata scoring from the bench and academy prospect Callum Hudson-Odoi marking his first senior start with a goal. Emile Smith Rowe continues to look the part, scoring his third goal of the campaign in just his sixth appearance. Football hot spots: Where are players produced in the countries of Europe's biggest leagues?

Where does talent come from? Are clubs looking in the right places to find it? We took a stab at this huge topic by limiting our search to the countries of Europe's big five -- Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga and Ligue 1 -- and using a software tool that pulled in data. After that, we asked our country experts to tell us what the findings meant. While by no means comprehensive or conclusive, there were a few surprises. For example, while usual suspects London and Paris are strong, they cannot compete with the Basque Country and Navarra. And what gives,...

Where do footballers come from? A look at Europe's most productive areas

Why are some areas considered hotbeds of talent when it comes to producing players? And where are they? We looked across Europe to see which were the most -- and least -- productive regions in terms of producing professional players. Q: How did you do that? A: First, to give us a base from which to work, we plotted the birthplace of every footballer from 18 European leagues. The data are based on the second half of the 2017-18 season, i.e. once the January transfer window closed. Javi Gracia: Watford head coach signs new long-term contract

Javi Gracia has signed a new long-term contract with Watford, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Gracia, 48, joined Watford in January to succeed Marco Silva, helping keep the Hornets in the top flight when relegation was a real possibility.

He started this season with four wins from the opening four matches, and currently has Watford in the top half of the Premier League table.

Gracia, who managed clubs in Spain, Greece and Russia before being appointed the Hornets’ head coach, has put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

“I am very happy to extend my contract,” Gracia said.

“I am very proud in this moment to be part of this club and to belong here for more seasons.”

Scott Duxbury, the Watford chairman and CEO, added: “We are delighted that Javi has agreed an extension to his contract.

“From day one it was clear that Javi worked well with us and shared our vision of how to achieve success for Watford Football Club, and we are looking forward to continuing that work together for many years to come.”

Gracia was brought in by Watford following the sacking of Marco Silva, who was dismissed in January on the back of a run of just one win in 11 matches.

Javi Gracia's career at Watford

 • Matches: 30
 • Wins: 11
 • Draws: 5
 • Defeats: 14
 • Goals for: 34
 • Goals against: 44
 • Points won: 38
 • Biggest win: 4-1 vs Chelsea, 3-0 vs Huddersfield
 • Biggest defeat: 5-0 vs Liverpool

The former midfielder was praised upon his appointment as ‘very highly valued in Spain’, though his Vicarage Road career began with a 1-0 defeat by Southampton in the FA Cup.

Watford ended the season winning four of their 15 matches played under Gracia’s tutelage, and he’s claimed a further seven wins so far this term; six in the Premier League and the other in the Carabao Cup

Memorable results include a 4-1 defeat of Chelsea in his first home match in charge, as well as a comeback victory over Tottenham played back in September.
